Traditional cream cheese frosting and even dairy free buttercream frosting are super easy to find nowadays, so what about keto vanilla buttercream?
Frosting lovers will be happy to know there are now lots of keto cream cheese frosting and keto buttercream frosting options out there. It’s always important to check the sweeteners but some of our favorites are:
- Birch Benders– Right now it looks like they are selling their frosting alongside their cake mix. Both are keto friendly and super tasty! Plus it’s zero net carbs.

Is Confectioners Sugar Keto Friendly?
Traditional powdered sugar also known as confectioners sugar is NOT keto friendly. Each 2.5g serving (1 tsp) has 10 calories 2.4 grams of sugar. That means one batch of frosting can have anywhere from 12-18 grams of sugar in 2 tablespoons depending on how much you add.
Powdered sugar or confectioners sugar is just granular sugar that has been pulverized into a powder. So, it’s the same thing, just a different form.
What Is The Best Keto Friendly Sweetener?
If you’re new to keto and confused about what the best keto friendly sweeteners are then we recommend reading our full in depth blog post. For now, we recommend a powdered sweetener like erythritol, monk fruit, or allulose.
They are great replacements for powdered sugar without the carbs or blood sugar spike. Just don’t get tricked and think powdered sugar is better than regular sugar!
Pro Tip: With any frosting you make, whether it’s low carb or not, buttercream or cream cheese, it’s important to use confectioner sugar!
So, you can either buy confectioner erythritol or powder your own erythritol using a spice or coffee grinder, which is what we like to do! We are always baking so we like to buy erythritol in a 5 pound bag.
The reason we don’t buy confectioner is because it’s normally more expensive and you don’t always need it powdered.
For example, our chewy chocolate chip cookies use granular erythritol! However, with frosting, you want a fine powder so it disappears into the mixture.
What Butter to Use in Buttercream Frosting
Most people make buttercream complicated. The only thing you need to worry about it that your buttercream has butter! Yes, that does also mean you can use a dairy free butter!
We use grass fed butter which is normally salted butter, but you can use unsalted butter if you prefer. In most keto recipes we use salted butter because it adds a nice contrast to the sweetness, but you can always use unsalted if you prefer and then add a pinch of salt.
Can I Make Dairy Free Buttercream?
Buttercream frosting is good on everything, including straight on a spoon. So is it possible to make Buttercream without butter?
While we don’t recommend it, it is possible. Dairy free alternatives can be used like vegan or dairy free butter. Our note to remember would be that it doesn’t have the same flavor, just texture. That means you may want to add a little extra vanilla extract to cover up the flavor.
Powdered sweetener will help with texture and flavor, but you might also need coconut milk to thin the frosting. If you don’t have coconut milk you can also use almond or cashew based nut milks.
How to Make Keto Buttercream
The keto diet doesn’t have to be hard, you can still enjoy tons of healthy sugar free keto recipes like this buttercream thanks to things like powdered monk fruit and erythritol sweeteners.
Ingredients
To make this delicious recipe for buttercream frosting you will need butter, powdered sweetener, vanilla extract, and heavy cream.
You can use almond milk if you don’t have heavy cream, or prefer to leave out the added dairy. We used
Make sure that the butter you use is softened. Softened butter or room temperature butter will always whip better than cold butter.
Making Keto Buttercream
- Begin by combining the butter, heavy cream, and vanilla in a bowl.
- Next add the powdered sweetener in two batches, whipping with a hand mixer to ensure everything is well combined.
- Store leftover frosting in an airtight container in the fridge.
Can I Freeze Buttercream?
If you have a lot of excess you can freeze leftover frosting. Regular butter freezes really well so you shouldn’t expect and big consistency changes.
Simply store the frosting in an airtight container for up to 3 months. When ready to use, remove from the freezer and place into the fridge to defrost overnight. For a quicker defrost you can place the closed tupperware on the counter at room temp.
How to Thicken Keto Frosting
The best way to thicken keto frosting is by adding extra powdered sweetener until it stiffens. On the other hand, if you are trying to loosen your frosting it is best to slowly add heavy cream or nut milk until the frosting has reached your desired consistency.
Keto Chocolate Buttercream Frosting
The greatest part about making vanilla buttercream frosting is that if you have any leftover all you have to do is add some cocoa powder, and it is instantly transformed.
Personally, Matt and I are chocolate people so we always go for a vanilla cake and chocolate frosting. Our favorite duo is this chocolate frosting on our protein cakes.
Protein cakes are just as guilt free as these keto frosting recipes! Less than 1 carbs per slice, topped with a buttercream frosting gives you the perfect balance of fat and protein in dessert form! Could it get any better?
Flavored Buttercream Options
If you’re making a specialty cake or dessert, there’s a chance you are going to want a flavored buttercream frosting.
The best way to flavor your buttercream will be using flavor extracts and drops like the ones from OOOFlavors. They have everything from lemon and blueberry to carrot cake, pecan pie, and pound cake.
The great part is, is that all their flavors are low carb and keto approved so you can enjoy your keto carrot cake without any fear of a blood sugar spike.

Is it better to use salted or unsalted butter for this recipe? Maybe one stick of each??
Kris says
In reading the ingredients, there is no vanilla listed that I can see. However, in the instructions, it states to add vanilla to the butter, whipping cream etc. How much vanilla is supposed to be used?
Carla Marquez says
How do you make powdered sugar?
Olivia Kendrick says
Matt & Megha use a spice/coffee grinder and grind erythritol to make powdered erythritol
Kye says
Just wanted to say thank you!!
This looks fantastic!
Deb says
I used monk fruit confectioner sugar, found it to be very sweet. I’ll try with 1 cup instead of 1.5. Also prefer with salted butter. Big hit in my house! Thank you
Monica says
Does this have to be refrigerated before use?
Olivia Kendrick says
Nope, just make sure the butter is softened and not completely melted.
Chelsea says
Just made this and I wasn’t impressed. It tasted like sweet butter? No go for me 🙁
Allen says
These were so good! I made it as vanilla first, then divided the frosting and added half the cocoa powder needed for the chocolate, some espresso powder and a pinch of salt. Then put them on almond flower butter cookies.

its_alyssa@live.com I just made this for my fiancé‘s birthday because he is on the keto diet (I did use salted butter) and added a little extra cocoa powder. It was SO yummy.
Terrie Bergman says
Does monk fruit make confectioners sugar? I don’t like the aftertaste of swerve!
Olivia Kendrick says
I am not sure about that one. Monk fruit is stronger than swerve so it would not be a one to one ratio. I know they make powdered monk fruit, but it would not turn out like icing because you would use significantly less for the same sweetness.
Nic says
This came out great but very sweet, and I typically love sweet things- I am wondering if I did something wrong or is it supposed to come out very very sweet? Thanks!
Olivia Kendrick says
Yes, that would probably be the erythritol. You can decrease the amount if it is too sweet for you 🙂
Nicole says
Thank you!
Paula M Harvey says
Thank you so much!!!
Paula M Harvey says
Can I use powdered monk fruit for this recipe? If so what is the equivalent measurement?
Thanks, Paula
Cass says
You can! We don’t know the exact measurement, but you could start with a little bit and just go by your own sweetness preference or you could look online for a conversion.
Kom K says
Hi there. QUick qtn. I cannot get Swerve here in Singapore. We do have Noew Foods Erythritol though and Equal Stevia Cooking/Baking sugar. Can I use one of these instead? I am a sucker for buttercakes with buttercream frosting and I am so missing my desserts while on keto. The weight loss, however, is keeping me off desserts but oh the craving!!!
Cass says
You can use any brand of erythritol and grind it up to make it a powder.

Made this recipe in the holiday season with the THM (Trim Healthy Mama, read about them, on “TRIM HEALTHY MAMA.com”) sugar cookies. I hate cream cheese frosting and had never really heard of buttercream keto frosting. I tried out this recipe and it turned out great. I frosted about 24 sugar cookies and then had a lot of frosting left over. I saved it and frosted a some cupcakes after letting the frosting thaw for some minutes from being in the fridge for a day. Thanks for the recipe, and encouragement for new people in keto to keep trying and watch the weight drop! ?
Lynda says
what proportion’s would I use for a single mug muffin ?
Maria says
Hi,
Does it matter if the butter is salted or unsalted?
Cass says
Salted butter will make a saltier frosting. We use unsalted.
candace says
Can I freeze it? If so for how long? Thanks!
Olivia Kendrick says
I am not sure how the texture would change in the freezer, but it should work if you store it in an airtight storage bag or container. Maybe a month or so.
Samantha says
Swerve/erythritol is not absorbed by the body so when you are putting these measurements in an app like myfitness pal or other keto friendly apps, there is no need to add the swerve ingredient.
Heather says
Salted or unsalted butter?
Cass (KetoConnect) says
Unsalted will be best!
